Aroeira
1
Par 72
This
championship course runs through a pinewood sprinkled with wild
flowers and wildlife; it is a genuine nature park. Set in a 345
hectare estate very close to Caparica which has a beach with
30 kilometres of white sand, Aroeira1 has become one of the most
famous golf courses in the country, with the advantage of being just
20 minutes from Lisbon, on the south bank of river Tagus. On a clear
day you can see the Portuguese capital from the first tee. The 8th,
a par 3 of 190 metres and a green with remarkable contour, is the
highlight of the opening nine. The 11th, a Par 4, which was
redesigned by Robert Trent Jones Sr. is very impressive. |

Aroeira
II
Designed by the architect Donald Steel, with 18 long
holes that weave between 6 large lakes, Aroeira's second
championship golf course was inaugurated in April 2000. One of the
course's characteristics is its 5 tees per hole, making it suitable
for all levels of players. Aroeira II was built to European Tour
standards in order to host major international golf events. It is
currently home to the Qualifying School of the Ladies European Tour.

Golfe do Montado
Close to Setubal, in a region with great
opportunities for tourism amongst which golf is surely a highlight,
the Montado course is surrounded by famous muscatel vineyards that
were planted here more than a century ago. It was designed by the
Portuguese Duarte Sottomayor, who began his career working with the
famous Robert Trent Jones. The 5th and 13th holes are particularly
impressive, the former a dogleg left requires a good drive to set up
a second shot to a wide green protected by water. The 13th is a hole
of great scenic beauty with a great view over Palmela Castle. It is
a par 4 and an excellent birdie opportunity. |

Quinta do Peru
Designed by Rocky Roquemore this is the newest golf course
to be built in the Azeitão region between the castles of Sesimbra
and Setubal, which is well known for its palaces, wines and cheeses.
With 3 par 5's to start followed by a difficult par 4 and a par 3 of
186 metres you must play good golf to score on the 1st nine. The
12th hole has a lake running down to the green and the 16th, a 200
metre par 3 across another lake will test your shotmaking. The
imposing Arrabida mountains provide a beautiful backdrop. |

Troia Golf
This course doesn't have any rough yet it is considered to
be Portugal's most difficult golf course. It is a links designed by
Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. Its principal obstacle is
sand which borders the whole course(Troia rough!), where pine trees
and wild plants are found in abundance.
With breathtaking views over the ocean and a welcoming
clubhouse set among pine trees, Troia is surely a golfers' paradise.
The Trent Jones signature can be seen on the greens, which
are small, narrow, and always well protected - sometimes by huge
bunkers.
Troia hosted the Portuguese Open Championship in 1983,
when Sam Torrance played his way to victory. |
